Abstract

Purpose: This study intends to examine main factors influencing the quality of life of the elderly in a rural community.

Method: Data was collected by a questionnaire from 161 elderly people. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficients, and multiple regression.

Result: This examination shows that: the more lonely the elderly feel, the lower the quality of their life is, while the better they do health behaviors, the higher the quality of their life is; and couples have better life than singles. It also tells that the aged who have taken high education or have good health have higher quality of life than those who have taken middle school or no education or poor health. Finally, health behaviors and loneliness were found as the factors influencing the quality of life of the aged living in a rural community, and the health behaviors showed 27.7% coefficient of determination.

Conclusion: These results suggest that it is urgent to set up strategies to improve the quality of life of the aged who are singles with a low level of social economy and poor health. And moreover, countermeasures to improve health behaviors and to reduce loneliness should be found out.
